And if you've time before the show, poke around the claud.online site, a colorful, personal website full of fun easter eggs. So this Kilby Court appearance suggests one of those "you were there when" situations. (Though the lyrics, as suggested by NPR above, contain all the emotions.) Considering that Claud continues to ascend to higher-profile gigs, radio appearances, showcases and the like, it's likely that a larger venue will be in the cards for Claud's next appearance in SLC. During the last moments of winter, Cluad's hummable pop song promise to bring some summery, upbeat pop to the last month containing some of that winter chill. And at the same time, there's this seemingly effortless sparkle to their music that gives it a real kick all the way through." We'd only quibble a bit with that use of "just," as Claud's music avoids the worst cliches and tropes of some youthful pop, preferring to settle into a lyrical approach that's equal parts thoughtful and playful, simple and deep, smartly-crafted and universal enough to remind someone a few times Claud's age to think back on loves lost-and-found. Unquestionably, the tracks are going to appeal first-and-foremost to a younger audience, and an NPR Morning Edition quote from Claud's press kit hints at this: "It's just songs about being young and figuring out your identity, figuring out what you want out of relationships. I’m not judging, for I have been known to drop a well-timed “fuck!” every now and then, but the contradictions and dichotomy of Ryley’s on-stage personality with the gloriousness of the music is confusing, frustrating and discombobulating. His tendency to sprinkle F-bombs throughout his between song chats is off-putting for some, hilarious for others. Others have written of the disparity between Ryley’s stage banter and the beautiful complexity of his music. “The Roundabout,” another extended piece featuring superb improvisation (as throughout Ryley’s performance) closed out the set.

“Telluride Speed” from the forthcoming Deafman Glance, due on May 18, followed with a series of bucolic, softly sung verses only to change directions with a jazzy power chord instrumental section.
Opening with “The Halfwit in Me,” from his 2016 album, “Golden Sings That Have Been Sung,” a song that bounces along with an intricate, sunny melody, eventually evolves into a beautiful closing coda. Bill Mackay’s accompaniment added a rich tonal foundation against Ryley’s power chords and lead runs. With virtuoso improvisational skills, an exquisite sense of drive and expert finger-picking technique, Ryley launched into a 40-minute set that alternated between soothing pastoral melodies and screeching sonic blasts. As if realizing his stumble, though, Ryley quickly muttered, “Okay, yeah, I’ll just shut up and play now.”Īnd play he did. The Lincoln Theatre has a long and storied history and is one of the District’s most beautiful venues, visually and acoustically.
Ryley, unfortunately, stumbled at the outset with an ill-timed observation about the venerable theatre and the untimely death of its beloved namesake. Although the songs largely “felt” like instrumentals due to the extended improvisational sections, Ryley’s occasional vocals owed much to the influence of Nick Drake and John Martyn during his performance opening for Calexico at the Lincoln Theatre on Friday.
